The High Court (HC) yesterday directed Building for Future Ltd to pay Tk 10 lakh in compensation to each of the families of four construction workers killed in a recent lift collapse in the capital.
It also asked the developer company to submit a report on compliance with its directives within two weeks.
On July 21, four workers--Zahidul Islam, 26, Delwar Hossain, 28, and his two nephews Rubel, 20, and Abdur Rahman, 18,--died as a makeshift lift carrying them plunged to the ground in a terrifying free-fall at a building being constructed by the developer in Kakrail.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed the order during a hearing on a suo moto rule.
Building for Future Ltd has already given Tk 3 lakh to each of the victim's family.
The HC bench issued the rule on July 24 following a report headlined "Construction Sites: Safety rules defied" published in The Daily Star on July 23.
In the rule, it asked the government to explain why it should not be directed to take legal action against the persons responsible for the workers' death.
Barrister Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury appeared for the developer company, while Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain stood for the government.
