Fire Service and Civil Defence and Rapid Action Battalion personnel searched or the boy in the River Sitalakhya for about two hours and a half but failed to recover the body.
Rab 11 commanding officer Mahbubul Alam told New Age that they would conduct search again in river today. He also said that there was no hope to find the child alive.
The battalion said the kidnappers, six of whom were arrested after they had
come to collect ransom, said that they had thrown the child into the river in an unconscious state.
The battalion said that the boy, Jihad, son of Aktar Hossain, was abducted from his house at Dharmaganj in Narayanganj on June 26 and the kidnappers held him to a ransom of Tk 3 lakh.
Jihad's mother Masuda Akter on June 27 went with the ransom money to Chashara Shahid Minar premises but the criminals did not turn up and she informed the battalion of the matter.
When the kidnappers again contacted her for the money, she went to Chashara Shahid Minar again with Tk 1 lakh.
RAB personnel, who were hiding in disguise, managed to capture three of the group when they were getting away with the money.
The battalion arrested three others at Shibu Market at Fatullah in the district based on the statement of the three already arrested.
The arrested, who included a woman, said that they had thrown Jihad into the river from the bridge after he had become unconscious on Monday, RAB-11 commanding officer said.
The arrested, all residents of Dharmaganj at Fatullah, are Wasim 26, Salam 19, Sadek 23, Swapan 30, Shakil 25, and Lucky Akter 19.
